Located at 142a-144 St. Vincent Street in Glasgow's Merchant City, the Hatrack is a narrow eight-storey office building, with an extraordinary roof, hence its unusual name. An Art Nouveau masterpiece, which is now A-listed, it was constructed in 1902 by local architect James Salmon (1873 - 1924). An early example of a building which relies on a steel framework for its strength, this allows glass to predominate in the facade, while the slender ribs of finely-detailed red sandstone are purely decorative. Inside, there is an ironwork lift-cage which is very much in sympathy with the style of the building.
