A nature reserve managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Loch of Kinnordy Nature Reserve extends to 88 ha (218 acres) and is surrounded by farm-land a half-mile (1 km) to the west of Kirriemuir in Central Angus. The RSPB leased the site as a reserve in 1976. It was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1985, a Ramsar site in 1994 and a Special Protection Area (SPA) in the same year. Interpretative displays explain the flora and fauna, which includes wildfowl and wading birds, together with fishing ospreys and whooper swans. Marsh harriers are frequently seen in the summer, otters in the spring and red squirrels are present throughout the year. Visitors can observe the birds from hides located around the loch.
