Glengarry Heritage Centre

(Invergarry Visitor Centre)

A small visitor centre occupying a dedicated room in Glengarry Community Hall, Glengarry Heritage Centre opened in 2006, a half-mile (0.7 km) west of the centre of the village. The centre houses a permanent exhibition telling the story of the people who lived in the glen. This concentrates on three themes; namely the MacDonells of Glengarry, the emigrations to Glengarry County in Ontario (Canada) and the Ellice family from Canada who ran the Glengarry Estate after the MacDonells departed in the mid-19th century. The centre offers a particularly warm welcome to visitors with local links, offers a service to those in search of their roots, and is home to an expanding archive of local history. A small reference library, includes local census records, together with collection of stories, documents and photographs from local people, former residents and Glengarry contacts worldwide.

Glengarry Heritage Centre is a charitable association run entirely by local volunteers, under the auspices of the Glengarry Visitor Centre Association, which was formed in 1998 to explore and preserve the rich local history and to provide a connection with the many clansmen who left their native lands for a new life in Canada and other places around the world. Their original visitor centre opened in 1999 in a wooden shed built on the site of an old inn next to the Invergarry Hotel.

The heritage centre has restricted opening during the summer, with other times by appointment.
