Glenfinnan Railway Station

(Gleann Fhionnainn)

A halt on the West Highland Railway line, Glenfinnan Station (Gael: Gleann Fhionnainn) lies on the hillside above the settlement of Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel, 14 miles (22.5 km) west northwest of Fort William. It is preceded by Locheilside Railway Station, 6 miles (10 km) to the east southeast, and followed by Lochailort, 8 miles (13 km) to the west. Opened in 1901 and now operated by ScotRail, Glenfinnan Railway Station is unstaffed and was used by only 6682 passengers in 2009-10. The station services four diesel passenger services per day in each direction, together with a tourist steam-drawn service in the summer months.

Most of the B-listed station buildings are now occupied by the Glenfinnan Station Museum, established in 1991. Also here are two 1950s-era railway cars, one used as a restaurant and the other for accommodation. A walking trail which begins here and leads a half-mile (1 km) east to the Glenfinnan Viaduct has become known as the Harry Potter Trail.
