Innerpeffray Collegiate Church

Innerpeffray Chapel, or the Collegiate Chapel of St. Mary, is located on the left bank of the River Earn, 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Crieff in Perth and Kinross. First recorded in 1365, it was built as a private chapel for the local noble family. It became the property of the Drummond family who rebuilt it in 1507-8 and it became their burial place. John, 1st Lord Drummond, provided for four chaplains who were to pray for his family's welfare and their souls after death. By 1542, Innerpeffray had become a collegiate church. It survived damage during the Reformation because it was a was a family burial-place but also because a remarkable lending library was stored in the loft. The chapel features the remains of a fine painted ceiling, a rare mediaeval altar at the east end and a fine lepers squint in the north wall. Also on the north wall is a blocked doorway which once led to the sacristy which is no longer extant. Interpretation panels by Historic Environment Scotland explain the supposed internal arrangement of the chapel, which is open to the public. Innerpeffray Library moved to a new building attached immediately to the northwest in 1762. Both buildings benefit from a Category-A listing.
