Christ Church

A somewhat inaccessible chapel, located on the uninhabited Hebridean island of Ensay in the Sound of Harris, Christ Church dates from the 12th century, although little is known of its early history. In ruins by the beginning of the 20th century, it was restored as a private chapel by Mrs Jessie Scott, a sister of the laird of the island who was resident at the nearby Ensay House. The roof was re-slated, the ceiling panelled in Californian redwood, a new oak door hung and fine internal fittings provided. The chapel was used from 1909 and services continued periodically until 1935, when it was made over to the Scottish Episcopal Church, with a small endowment for its maintenance on condition that it was used for at least two services annually. Unfortunately the church fell into disrepair once again although, with a new laird, it was once again restored and re-dedicated in 1973.
