Old Royal Station

Located on Station Square in the centre of Ballater (Aberdeenshire), the Old Royal Station opened as a museum and exhibition in 2001 following extensive refurbishment of the former terminus of the Deeside Railway which closed in 1966. The building contains a tourist information centre, together with shops and a restaurant and an exhibition entitled 'Royalty and Railways'. This explores the grandeur and ceremony which accompanied Royal visits. The Deeside Railway was extended to Ballater in 1866 and, before it closed, the station in Ballater was visited by no less than six reigning British monarchs en route to their retreat at Balmoral Castle. In addition, numbers of European Royalty passed through the station travelling to visit the British Royal family including, in 1896, Nicholas II the last Czar of Russia. The B-listed building was devastated by a fire in 2015.
