A Victorian Baronial mansion built 1864-8 for John Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair (1819 - 1903), Lochinch Castle lies 1¼ miles (2 km) north of the village of Castle Kennedy and 3 miles (5 km) east of Stranraer. The work of Edinburgh-based architects Brown & Wardrop, the house comprises two storeys with a taller tower set off-centre and shows French influences, particularly in the roof, alongside the classic Baronial crenellations, turrets and crow-stepped gables. At the east end of the house is a ruined service range. The interior is of Jacobean style, with fine chimney-pieces in oak and marble. The principal rooms are on the first floor and comprise a drawing room, dining room and library, the latter featuring walnut doors on its bookcases.
The house is located in beautiful parkland, which includes the ruined Castle Kennedy (1607) and fine gardens first laid out in 1722 and restored in the 1840s. The estate workers were resettled in the new village of Castle Kennedy to sanitise the landscape in the 1860s.
