Easthouse

A restored traditional croft-house and associated buildings on the island of West Burra in Shetland, Easthouse is located at Duncansclate, 1¼ miles (2 km) south of Bridge End. One of only two thatched croft-houses that survives in the Shetland, the property featured in the BBC television programme Restoration in 2003. The site comprises five buildings; namely the original croft-house with its dry-stone walls and thatched roof (c. 1830), extended by a backhouse (c. 1913), a byre and pig-sty of the same era and construction as the croft-house and a more modern barn. The property of the Ewanson family for 150 years, who were fishermen-crofters in the classic Shetland tradition, the buildings were abandoned in the 1980s and had become derelict.

Between 2003 and 2006, the Burra History Group have restored Easthouse as a local heritage centre, with exhibitions on life in the local community and the reconstruction project.
