A long-established football stadium in Dundee, Dens Park is located between Dens Road and Sandeman Street, a mile (1.5 km) north of the city centre. Home to Dundee Football Club since 1899, the stadium is situated only a quarter-mile (0.4 km) west of Tannadice Park, the base of intense rivals Dundee United. No other Scottish football teams have their grounds so close together and indeed it is said that no other professional football teams in the world are based so near to each other.
The record attendance was 43,024, set in 1953 when Dundee played Rangers in the Scottish Cup. The stadium was redeveloped in 1999, with the construction of two identical all-seated stands and the capacity was reduced to 12,085. The floodlighting was upgraded in 2000 and under-pitch heating was installed in 2005.
Dundee Football Club was founded in 1893 through the amalgamation of two existing clubs (Our Boys and East End) and were immediately admitted to the Scottish Football League. The club played for their first few years at Carolina Port, to the east of the city centre. The club has won the Scottish League Championship (1961-62), the Scottish Cup (1909-10) and the Scottish League Cup (1951-52, 1952-53 and 1973-74). It has also suffered significant lows, including demotions and having been declared bankrupt twice since 2000.
