Taking its name from the Barony parish which encircled the east end of the city centre, this red sandstone building was formerly the Barony Church, completed in 1890 and replacing an older 18th Century church. The original Barony Church was established in the crypt of Glasgow Cathedral in 1595 and features in Sir Walter Scott's historical novel Rob Roy.
Designed by Sir J. J. Burnet (1857 - 1938), the current building is an example of the architectural style known as Scottish Gothic Revival. It is now used as the ceremonial hall for the University of Strathclyde, where graduations and other official functions are held. A restoration was completed in 1995 with the installation of three stained glass windows designed by John Clark (b.1957) to commemorate the bicentenary of the University.
