Lennox Tower

(Lennox Castle)

A ruined 15th-century rectangular keep, Lennox Tower lies at Lymphoy opposite Currie, across the Water of Leith, a mile (1.5 km) northeast of Balerno. Only the basement remains, with the entrance in the northeast corner and the base of a turnpike stair, which was once enclosed within the wall. Built for the Stewart Earls of Lennox, it was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87), James Douglas, the Regent Morton (c.1516-81) and King James VI (1566 - 1625). It later became the property of goldsmith and Royal financier George Heriot (1563 - 1624).
