A terminal railway station on the North Ayrshire coast, Largs Station (Gael: An Leargaidh) lies immediately to the south of the town centre. This is the end of the North Ayrshire line, resulting in a gap in the railway between here and Wemyss Bay, 7 miles (11 km) to the north, the terminus of the Inverclyde Line.
Opened in 1885 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway, Largs is preceded by Fairlie Station, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the south. The line was electrified in 1987. In 1995, a train failed to stop and ploughed through the station destroying the buildings but without the loss of life. Temporary arrangements were in place until a new smaller station building was completed in 2005. Now operated by ScotRail, Largs Station is staffed part-time and is used by 470,412 passengers per annum (2009-10).
