Dunmore Tower

(Elphinstone Tower, Airth Tower)

A ruined rectangular keep, Dunmore Tower (alternatively Elphinstone Tower or Airth Tower) lies on the Dunmore Estate, a mile (1.5 km) northwest of Airth in Falkirk Council Area. Built around 1510 for Sir John Elphinstone of Airth, whose family had acquired the estate by marriage in the early 14th century, the tower once rose to four storeys. Admiral George Keith Elphinstone (1st Viscount Keith) was born here in 1746. In 1754 the estate and tower were sold to William Murray, the 3rd Earl of Dunmore (1696 - 1756). George Murray, the 5th Earl (1762 - 1836) built Dunmore Park nearby as his residence c.1820 and from around that time the basement of the old tower was used as the family mausoleum. The tower subsequently became ruinous and the burial vault was vandalised in the early 1990s.
