Southfield House

A fine mansion located a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Liberton in S Edinburgh, Southfield House was built in 1875 by architect John Chesser and converted in 1902 to become Southfield Hospital, part of the Royal Victoria Sanatorium. It was extended during the 1920s and again in the 1930s but, with the decline of tuberculosis, became a hospital specialising in care of the elderly and eventually closed in 1999. As part of a public-private partnership the house was then redeveloped as private flats and the 60-bed Ellen's Glen House was built in the grounds at a cost of £2.6 million as a residential care facility for the elderly.
