Auctioneer at Mart, Castle Douglas

The largest livestock auction market in South West Scotland is located on New Market Street in Castle Douglas (Dumfries and Galloway). Wallets' Marts have been selling livestock since 1856 and have occupied their current site since 1888. The auction ring occupies a distinctive octagonal building in brick with red sandstone dressings (c.1900), with animal pens and sheds behind. Regular sales of sheep, lambs, beef and store cattle attract buyers from around the country. A particular specialism is the sale of pedigree Galloway cattle.
