Moorheads Hospital is a two-storey building on St Michael's Street in Dumfries, opposite St. Michael's Church. It comprises three central bays with wings at both ends, all painted buff with darker quoins and a slate roof. Above the entrance is a plaque which explains that it was built at the expense of James and William Moorhead in 1753. It was the work of local contractors James Harley and Alexander Crombie. The merchant brothers endowed the establishment as a refuge for the aged poor and to provide for the maintenance of orphans. Around forty residents were supplied with comfortable clothing, a wholesome diet and medical attendance as required. Much later the Hospital became an old people's home and was B-listed in 1981. When this closed, the building was sold by Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council in 2004 and has subsequently been converted to other uses.
