A small uninhabited island of the Orkney Isles, Faray (also Fara) and the Holm of Faray to the north form a ridge of Middle Old Red Sandstone that extends southwards from Weather Ness at the southern tip of the island of Westray. Rising to a height of 32m (105 feet), Faray has an area of 140ha (346 acres). The population of the island reached 83 in 1871, but in the early 1930s there were still 40 people earning a living from crofting and lobster fishing. Today, the island and its smaller neighbour form a Special Area of Conservation (SAC; designated 2005) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) owing to a well-established breeding population of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus).
