Donald Murchison's Monument

An easily-accessible memorial which has become a popular tourist-stop at the side of the A87 trunk road, Donald Murchison's Monument lies on a little rocky headland overlooking Loch Alsh, 1½ miles (2.5 km) east of the settlement of Kyle of Lochalsh. This grey granite obelisk commemorates Colonel Donald Murchison (d.1727), a Jacobite and loyal factor to William Mackenzie, 5th Earl of Seaforth (1681 - 1740) looking after his affairs during his exile in Paris. The memorial was erected in 1861 by his great grand nephew, the geologist, Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792 - 1871).
