Sandaig Lighthouse

A modern lighthouse on Eilean Mor, the largest of the Sandaig Islands, Sandaig lighthouse overlooks the Sound of Sleat 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Glenelg. Commissioned in 2002, this automatic lighthouse comprises a white aluminium-clad metal framework tower some 5m (16 feet) in height. It has a flashing white light with a range of 8 miles (13 km). This structure replaced an earlier lighthouse, which was the work of David A. (1854 - 1938) and Charles Stevenson (1855 - 1950) in 1910. The older lighthouse comprised a 7.3-m (24-foot) octagonal white-painted cast-iron tower, with a traditional lantern gallery. This has been restored and relocated to Glenelg, next to the ferry terminal.
