St Peter's RC Church

Located on a corner site in otherwise residential Falcon Avenue, in the Morningside district of Edinburgh, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church is regarded by some as architect Sir Robert Lorimer's most innovative church design. This Italianate church was built in two stages: 1906-27, with the nave completed 1928-29. Its tall square campanile is distinctive, as is the courtyard, formed between the church, presbytery and former school. The interior is unexpectedly large and bright, lit by six tall windows, with white-painted brick soaring above the natural colour of the lower courses. High above the nave wrought-iron monograms serve as anchors for tie-rods which cross the narrow aisles.

The sculpture of The Crucifixion on the canted apse is by Joseph Hayes. The stained glass is by Morris and Gertrude Meredith Williams, Nina Millar Davidson and Pierre Fourmaintraux. The lead font with a fish motif is by G. P. Bankart.
