Redhall Walled Garden

A substantial old Edinburgh kitchen garden, now operated to organic standards, Redhall Walled Garden lies within Craiglockhart Dell, on the left bank of the Water of Leith. It is accessible from Lanark Road, 3 miles (5 km) southwest of the city centre. Enclosed within high walls, lined with brick, it was laid out c.1756 by Robert Bowie, a nurseryman, for George Inglis of Auchendinny, who had acquired the Redhall estate the previous year and was building Redhall House on the opposite side of the river.

Ownership has subsequently passed to the City of Edinburgh Council and, since 1983, the garden has been managed by the Scottish Association of Mental Health (SAMH) as a training centre which provides a supportive working environment for adults recovering from mental health problems. Up to 36 individuals receive full-time placements from SAMH to be trained to nationally-recognised standards in horticulture, following organic principles.

The garden includes a picturesque summer house featuring a Venetian pedimented front, decorated with urns.
