Freeport Leisure Village

(Freeport Village)

An abandoned retail and leisure centre set in rural West Lothian, Freeport Leisure village is situated at Westwood, to the north of the Breich Water, a mile (1.5 km) west northwest of West Calder and 1¼ miles (2 km) northeast of Addiewell. Opened in 1996 at the cost of £30 million, the shopping centre lost out due to the development of similar facilities in Livingston, just 3 miles / 5 km to the east northeast, including the Livingston Designer Outlet which opened in 2000. It closed in 2004.

The site comprises a complex on low-rise, former buildings formed around two 'streets'. Although extending to 53.4 ha (132 acres), two-thirds of the site are vacant, never completed as originally envisaged. The development was intended to feature Scotland's first indoor snow centre, complete with ski slopes, toboggan runs, snowboarding facilities and a children's winter wonderland, together with a pitch and putt golf course and driving range. However, after much wrangling, planning permission to complete the development was refused by the Scottish Government.

The abandoned village was used as the location for BBC3 television's reality gameshow I Survived A Zombie Apocalypse, which itself survived only one series in 2015.
