Uist and Barra Hospital

A small general hospital located in Balivanich on the island of Benbecula, the Uist and Barra Hospital opened in 2001. It serves all of the southern islands of the Outer Hebrides, replacing a 21-bed hospital in Daliburgh and the 25-bed care of the elderly hospital in Lochmaddy. The hospital provides 29 beds and focuses on care of the elderly, general practitioner-led acute services and midwife-led maternity services. There is an accident and emergency department, an X-ray department and a single operating theatre, together with a £500,000 endoscopy suite which was officially opened in 2008 by Deputy First Minister and Health Secretary, Nicola Sturgeon (b.1970).

Visiting consultants from the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway provide orthopaedic, surgical and medical specialities while consultants from Raigmore Hospital in Inverness provide additional services.
