Shedden Park

A modest park with a remarkable triumphal entrance, Shedden Park lies on Shedden Park Road, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) northeast of Kelso town centre. The park was presented to the town in 1851 by Mrs Robertson of Ednam House in memory of her nephew, Robert Shedden, who died in 1849 at Mazatlan on the Pacific coast of Mexico while sailing round the world, having helped in the search for Sir John Franklin's expedition. The gateway was erected in 1852 on the south side of the park by the people of Kelso to record their appreciation of the gift, and comprises three arches - the central arch provides a vehicle entrance between Tuscan-style pilasters - with more modest arches to the east and west providing pedestrian entrances.
