Monteath Mausoleum

An unusual structure located prominently on Gersit Law a quarter-mile (0.4 km) west of the A68 Trunk Road and 4½ miles (7 km) northwest of Jedburgh the Monteath Mausoleum is a tall, square Neo-Byzantine building with a domed roof, featuring two rows of large stars filled by glass and a cross finial. This is the tomb of General Sir Thomas Monteath Douglas of Stonebyres (1787 - 1868), who had come by the Ancrum estate, on which the mausoleum lies, through marriage. It was built in fine ashlar by Peddie & Kinnear in 1864, a date inscribed on the corner of the building. Each faces features four Ionic pilasters. The entrance to the mausoleum now lies open but is guarded by two sandstone lions, one awake and one asleep. Inside large statues of angels lie at the head and foot of the plain sarcophagus. An inscription above the entrance states:

In Memory of
General Sir Thomas Monteath Douglas K.C.B.
of Stonebyres Lanarkshire
who died XVIII October MDCCCLXVIII

The building is Category-B listed.
