Scottish Borders Council Offices (Peebles)

A particularly pleasant set of municipal buildings which gives the impression of a modest French villa of two storeys and an attic, with two single-storey wings, the Scottish Borders Council Offices in Peebles lie on Rosetta Road, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north of the town centre. Built in 1935 to replace the Town House on the High Street, the harled facade comprises five-bays and features sandstone ashlar details and a small tower-cupola place centrally on the piend roof. The architects were J.M. Dick Peddie and W.J. Walker Todd, with Scott Morton & Co. responsible for the interior, which is well-preserved and very much of its time, including a neat Council Chamber. Peebles Sheriff Court dates from 1807, its original building now known as the Old Sheriff Court but latterly it was located within the Council Offices. This court will close in 2015, with its work transferred to Selkirk.

The site was previously occupied by the Peebles Combination Poorhouse, built in 1857. This building had been used by the military during World War I, but closed in 1919 and was demolished in the early 1930s.

The Scottish Borders Council Headquarters are in Newtown St. Boswells.
