Cumbernauld House is an A-listed mansion located in 22 ha (54 acres) of mature parkland setting a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east southeast of Cumbernauld Village and 1¼ miles (2 km) northeast of Cumbernauld Town Centre. Built in 1731 on the site of the 14th C. Cumbernauld Castle to the designs of William Adam (1689 - 1748) for John Fleming, 6th Earl of Wigtown (1673 - 1744), it represents a fine Classical-style rectangular block of two storeys and a basement. The garden front features a full-height semi-octagonal bay. Intended to have two-storey wings to the north and south, only the northern wing was built giving the resulting property a lack of symmetry. The house was damaged by Jacobite troops in 1745 and was gutted by fire c.1870, requiring complete internal reconstruction.
Cumbernauld Development Corporation bought the Cumbernauld Estate in 1955, including the house, which became their headquarters providing office accommodation most notably for the architects and planners who designed the New Town. Ownership passed to North Lanarkshire Council in 1996. The building was then sold and eventually converted into private flats.
Today, Cumbernauld House Park surrounds the mansion.
