St Nicholas Shopping Centre

St. Nicholas Shopping Centre comprises 24 shops on two levels and represents a simple straight-through indoor mall, connecting Union Street and Netherkirkgate to Schoolhill and Upperkirkgate in the centre of Aberdeen. The centre is slotted-in between gardens in a desperate attempt not to spoil the environs of Schoolhill and its historic neighbour, St. Nicholas' Kirk. The anchor store is a 10,219 sq. m (110,000 sq. foot) Marks & Spencer, while the other units make up a further 10,863 sq. m (115,000 sq feet) of retail space. Opened by Lord Provost Henry Rae on the 3rd October 1985, the centre was the work of local architects Thomson, Taylor, Craig and Donald. It is now owned jointly by two London-based commercial property management companies (British Land and Land Securities) and managed jointly with the Bon Accord Shopping Centre, which lies on the opposite side of Schoolhill. British Land previously held a minority interest in the Centre, but acquired the entirety of the property from a pension fund and GUS Plc in 2003. The following year, British Land entered into an agreement with Land Securities to share ownership of both the St. Nicholas and Bon Accord Shopping Centres, and manage these jointly. The two centres together comprise 69,677 sq. m (750,000 sq. feet) of retail space. A major facelift of the St. Nicholas Centre was completed in 2009, comprising new flooring, lighting and other fittings to freshen up a dated interior.
