A particularly prominent monument on Rosemount Viaduct in Aberdeen city centre, this massive statue of William Wallace (1274 - 1305) in classical dress stands in front of His Majesty's Theatre, overlooking Union Terrace Gardens. Erected in 1888, it was the work of sculptor William Grant Stevenson (1849 - 1919). The monument was paid for with funds left for the purpose by John Steill of 38 Grange Road in Edinburgh, the son of James Steill sometime of Easter Baldowrie in Angus.
Wallace really has no connection with Aberdeen, although Blind Harry (c.1440-92) wrote fanciful tales of his exploits in the area. Wallace's life is extensively described around the plinth of the statue.
