Marketgait Tunnel

A dual-carriageway road tunnel in Dundee, Marketgait Tunnel was built 1990-92 under the Hilltown and Victoria Road, to the north of the Wellgate Centre. The tunnel represents the major part of the £13 million final phase of the A991 Inner Ring Road and is 145m (475 feet) in length. Construction was technically demanding owing to the proximity to existing buildings and the geological conditions (a mix of Lower Devonian sediments and lavas). The cut-and-cover method was used, with the sidewalls supported by rock anchors and the bedrock stabilised with spray-concrete as required, both within the tunnel itself and on the open cut sections which form its approaches.
