An isolated property overlooking Loch an Eilein in the centre of the island of Tiree, Island House lies a half-mile (1 km) west of Crossapoll. It was built in 1748 by Archibald Campbell, the 3rd Duke of Argyll (1682 - 1761), for his factor, who managed the island on the Duke's behalf. The house was constructed on an island in the loch, which had previously been the site of a castle, with a causeway linking to its southern shore. This modest house comprises two storeys, and is white-harled, with a single-storey office block added to the west in 1769 and a pair of gabled blocks, projecting to the south, which were constructed in the 19th century. It once included a court room and a prison cell, but has now been converted to provide self-catering holiday accommodation. Island House is accessible via a short track which extends north from the B8065 road.
