Duke of Gordon's Monument

A notable landmark prominently located on the highest point of Torr Alvie, 2½ miles (4 km) south southwest of Aviemore in Highland Council Area, the Duke of Gordon's Monument is a tall granite Tuscan-style column, with a marble plaque on a square stepped base. It was erected by subscription 1839-40 in memory of George Gordon, the 5th Duke of Gordon (1770 - 1836), who raised the Gordon Highlanders. The monument reaches 27.4m (90 feet) in height, is now B-listed and is visible from all directions.
