Tower of Hallbar

Located near Crossford in South Lanarkshire, the Tower of Hallbar is a compact five-storey defensive tower house which was built before 1581. The walls average 1.6m (5¼ feet) in thickness. Originally a Hamilton property, it passed to the Red Douglases and then, in 1681, was bought by the Sir George Lockhart of Lee (1630-89). By the 19th C. the building had been abandoned for many years but was restored by the seventeen-year-old Sir Norman Macdonald Lockhart in 1861. At this time, the battlemented parapets and crow-stepped gables were constructed to finish the top of the tower, where originally there was a pigeon-loft. Hallbar was then let, but the last tenant left in 1984 and again the tower fell into disrepair. However, it was the subject of a considered and sympathetic restoration by the Vivat Trust and reopened as exclusive holiday accommodation in 2000. The trust also maintains the surrounding woodlands.
