Located at Rosaburn on the northern edge of Brodick, overlooking the Glenrosa Water, the Isle of Arran Heritage Museum has displays on the social history of the island together with its archaeology and geology.
The museum occupies a group of buildings centred on a former school, these are today presented as a 19th Century farm cottage, 1920s schoolroom, milk house, laundry, smiddy, stable and harness room. The smiddy remains as it was when work stopped in the 1960s, with forges, bellows, tools and other original equipment. Metalworking demonstrations are given several times a year. There are exhibitions on Wartime Arran, the island's seafaring traditions, weights and measures, and the Clearances. Photographs show past village life and old farming methods, while archives provide information on family history.
The driving force behind the creation of the museum was the late Miss Bess MacMillan MBE, who was Chairman of the Arran Tourist Association. It opened in 1979 and is now run by the enthusiastic volunteers of the Isle of Arran Museum Trust.
