Methil Heritage Centre

Located in the former Post Office building on the High Street of Lower Methil (Fife), Methil Heritage Centre is a small local history museum and exhibition venue. Opened in 1991 the centre was the initiative of the Lower Methil Community Association. The centre displays a range of objects, pictures and documents relating to the social and cultural heritage of the Methil - Levenmouth area and its people, an area which was for centuries the industrial heart of Fife. Mining was a key industry and Methil Docks was once Scotland's main coal-exporting port. The Centre also offers a programme of temporary exhibitions.

Initially an independent museum, funding from the European Union Urban Programme allowed professional staff to be employed. When this disappeared the value of the Centre was recognised and it was taken on by Fife Museums Service in 1998, although still make use of a group of local volunteers, the Methil Heritage Friends.

The museum receives approximately 5-7000 visitors per year.
