The Tarbat Discovery Centre is a museum and visitor centre located in Portmahomack, Highland Council Area, occupying the former Tarbat Old Parish Church (St. Colmac's Church), which was abandoned in 1946 but is now A-listed. The Centre has displays on local history, particularly examining the life of the Picts, through finds taken from local archaeological digs, together with carved stones and computer recreations. It also houses memorabilia relating to Peter Fraser (1884 - 1950), the wartime prime minister of New Zealand who was born nearby. Opened in 1999 by HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, the Discovery Centre is owned and managed by the Tarbat Historic Trust. Adjacent is a nationally-important Pictish monastic settlement, which was the subject of archaeological investigation by the University of York between 1994 and 2007.
