Situated on the western outskirts of Brechin on a crag overlooking the River South Esk, Brechin Castle is the seat of the Earls of Dalhousie. A castle built by the Maules existed here in the 13th Century, but for nearly 300 years Brechin was a royal stronghold. In the 16th century it passed to the Erskine Earls of Mar, but in 1634 it was purchased by the Maules who were later created Earls of Panmure. Much of the present building was erected in the 18th century. There is a visitor centre and Pictish Centre in its grounds.
