Lying next to the Parish Hall in the village of Arbuthnott is the Grassic Gibbon Centre, a visitor centre dedicated to the life and times of James Leslie Mitchell (1901-35), better known by his pen name, Lewis Grassic Gibbon. Built by the community in 1991, it was designed to be in architectural sympathy with the neighbouring hall. It is run as a charitable educational centre and visitors can trace the author's life through an exhibition, as well as see books, photographs and other personal effects which belonged to Gibbon. The centre lies close to the farm where Gibbon was brought up, within yards of the parish school where his talent was encouraged and close to the Arbuthnott's 13th Century church where his ashes were interred in the churchyard at the end of his tragically-short life. The centre also acts as a local history centre for the surrounding district, known as The Mearns, where Gibbon set his books.
