Mortuary Chapel

Situated in Arbroath's Western Cemetery in E Angus, the Mortuary Chapel was designed by the owner of Hospitalfield House, Patrick Allan-Fraser (1813-96) as a mausoleum for his wife (who died in 1873), her parents and eventually himself. Built between 1875 and 1884 by Fraser's stonemason, John Peters, this exceptionally grand edifice of Neo-Gothic architecture has stonework unrivalled by anything in Scotland, including carvings of a traditional Highland funeral procession. Once complete, Allan-Fraser gifted the structure to Arbroath Town Council as a non-denominational chapel along with a generous endowment to fund its ongoing upkeep.
