Dunwan Dam

Located on moorland 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Eaglesham, the Dunwan Dam is one of a number of reservoirs in the extensive area of East Renfrewshire known as Eaglesham Moor. Built on the course of the Dunwan Burn in 1820 to provide water to power the cotton mills in Eaglesham, via the Rivoch Cut, it was expanded for the purpose of supplying drinking water in the 1930s with a new dam wall built to the north of the original, which is now underwater. It grew from an area of 36.5 ha (90 acres) to 52 ha (129 acres) and now impounds approximately 1.6 million cu. m (57.6 million cu. feet) of water. The draw-off tower is of an unusual design, sited within a bell-mouth spillway, thus reducing the pressure at the base of the tower and preventing leaks. There is a boat house on the northern shore.
