Located by the roadside high on an escarpment overlooking Traprain Law, some 2½ miles (4 km) southwest of East Linton. The Balfour Monument takes the form of a sizeable obelisk built of red sandstone and dedicated to James Balfour (1820-56), the father of both British Prime Minister Arthur Balfour (1848 - 1930) and embryologist Francis Balfour (1851-82), thus:
Erected to the memory of James Maitland Balfour Esq. of Whittingeham, Major Commandant of the East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry by the officers and non-commissioned officers of that Corps in testimony of their great respect and esteem of him as a Commanding Officer, of their affectionate regard for him as an amiable and able country gentleman and of their deep and lasting regret for his premature removal from among them.
