Churchill Barrier No 1

The northernmost and most challenging to build of the four Churchill Barriers which connect the southeastern islands of Orkney, Barrier No. 1 was constructed across St. Mary's Bay and Holm Sound between the Orkney Mainland and the small island of Lamb Holm. This barrier is 610m (2001 feet) in length and crosses the deepest of the channels, with extensive foundations required to bridge fast-flowing tidal waters up to 18m (60 feet) in depth. It was completed in 1944 and officially opened with the other barriers the following year.
