Churchill Barrier No 3

One of the four Churchill Barriers which connect the islands in E Orkney, Barrier No. 3 now carries the A961 road between the islands of Glimps Holm and Burray. It was built across the Weddell Sound in 1940-44 and officially opened the following year. The barrier is 420m (1410 feet) in length. The remains of blockships that were sunk as an earlier protection for Scapa Flow during the First World War can still be seen to the east of the barrier.
