Churchill Barrier No 4

The most southerly of the four Churchill Barriers which connect the southeastern islands of Orkney, Barrier No. 4 was built across the Water Sound between Burray and South Ronaldsay from 1940 to 1944, and is 650m (2133 feet) in length. A considerable amount of sand has accumulated naturally on the eastern side of the barrier, which has become vegetated.
