The Craiglockhart Campus of Edinburgh Napier University lies on Colinton Road, 2½ miles (4 km) southwest of central Edinburgh. The campus was built as the Craiglockhart Hydropathic Institution (1880) in the Italianate style and was also used as a military hospital during the First World War. The poets Siegfried Sassoon (1886 - 1967) and Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918) convalesced here after having been injured on the Western Front. Thereafter it became the Convent of the Sacred Heart and then Craiglockhart College of Education, which was founded in 1920 as a Roman Catholic teacher training college for women. This college merged with Notre Dame College of Education in Glasgow in 1981 and the Craiglockhart premises passed to Napier University. The original building was extended to the rear at the cost of £25 million in 2004, including a space-age lecture theatre pod designed by BDP Architects.
