A B-listed Arts-and-Crafts mansion set in 2.8 ha (7 acres) of secluded gardens and woodland on the steep eastern slopes of Newton Hill in NE Fife, Sandford House was built in 1913 for Harben J. Valentine (1872 - 1949), owner of Dundee-based picture postcard publishers, by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott (1865 - 1945). This was one of only two or perhaps three buildings in Scotland by Scott, who was born in England the son of a wealthy Scottish farmer and regarded as one of the most important and influential architects in the Arts and Crafts movement. The house is L-plan, white harled and features sweeping red-tiled roofs, leaded windows and makes extensive use of natural oak. This replaced another smaller thatched property by Scott built in 1902, which was destroyed by a fire.
It operated as the Sandford Country House Hotel, with sixteen en-suite guest rooms, until 2009 but has subsequently returned to being a private residence.
