Edinburgh BioQuarter

A 67.5-ha (167-acre) research and business park for life sciences research and development, Edinburgh BioQuarter is located on part of the former Edmonstone and Craigmillar Castle estates, including to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health at Little France, 3¾ miles (6 km) southeast of the city centre. Announced in 2007, the BioQuarter represents a £600 million collaboration between Scottish Enterprise, The University of Edinburgh, NHS Lothian and US-based developer Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc. Over 1000 life science researchers are based at the University's Queen's Medical Research Institute or in the adjacent medical school (Chancellor's Building). The Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine was added in 2011, headed by Professor Sir Ian Wilmut who cloned Dolly the Sheep, followed by the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic (2015), the Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (2021) and the University of Edinburgh's Usher Institute (2024), which brings together bioinformatics and other groups using data to benefit health and wellbeing. The site will ultimately provide more than 46,451 sq. m (500,000 sq. feet) of academic research space together with 83,613 sq. m (900,000 sq. feet) of accommodation for commercial research-based companies, offering the ideal environment for both spin-out companies and new ventures.
