A leisure complex which occupies a former whisky warehouse on School Street in Bowmore, Islay, the Mactaggart Leisure Centre is situated next to the Bowmore Distillery, overlooking Loch Indaal. The centre comprises a 25m swimming pool, sauna, fitness studio, multi-purpose activity and meeting room, and a small sports shop. It represents the only indoor swimming pool on the island and the water is heated using waste heat from the neighbouring distillery. The facility opened on 29th June 1991 following a determined local campaign which raised the £1 million necessary for its construction and was named after Glasgow-based property developer Sir Ian Mactaggart (1923-87), father of Sir John Mactaggart - a local resident and one of the centre's major benefactors.
The centre is run by Islay and Jura Community Enterprises, a community business owned by the local population.
