Achany Wind Farm

A medium-sized wind farm located on the Achany Estate in Sutherland (Highland Council Area), the development lies to the north of the A839 road, 4 miles (6.5 km) west southwest of Lairg. It comprises 19 REpower MM82 turbines, each with a blade diameter of 82m (269 feet) and an output of 2 MW, giving a total generation capacity of 38 MW. Having initially faced objections on the basis of its impact on the landscape, the development was given planning permission in 2007 following a public inquiry. Achany Wind Farm was built at a cost of £55 million and was commissioned in October 2010. It is owned and operated by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) Plc. A community benefit fund distributes around £100,000 annually to local community projects and underwrites an apprenticeship scheme.

In 2011, following complaints from local residents, Highland Council forced a temporarily suspension of operations because SSE had failed to control noise from the wind farm.

The Rosehall Wind Farm was built immediately to the west in 2013.
